FHP warns drivers of dense fog advisory

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The National Weather Service issued a dense fog advisory Wednesday for all northeast Florida counties, and the Florida Highway Patrol urged drivers to use caution.

The advisory is in effect from 11 p.m. Wednesday until 11 am. Thursday.

NWS said visibility is less than one-quarter mile in Duval, St. Johns, Clay, Baker, Bradford, Columbia, Hamilton, Nassau, Suwannee and Union counties.

FHP said visibility could deteriorate quickly because of fog conditions, especially during the night and early morning hours.

FHP reminded drivers to reduce speed and use low beam headlights to adapt to changing weather conditions.

Drivers can stay safe on the road by following some simple rules.

  • Slow down. Don't drive faster than your vision.
  • Be cautious. Fog can become thicker without warning and without being noticed until it is too late to react.
  • Increase following distance. Ensure enough reaction time and stopping distance.
  • Use low-beam headlights.
  • Use windshield wipers and defroster as necessary to maximize visibility.
