St. Johns River Ferry cleared by U.S. Coast Guard

Ship deemed safe after cracks found in hull repaired

Repairs are made to the St. Johns River Ferry at Mayport.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The St. Johns River Ferry resumed regular service at 6 a.m. Monday, connecting State Road A1A from Mayport Village to Fort George Island.

The U.S. Coast Guard cleared the ferry vessel to return to service Sunday evening following emergency dry docking and repairs.

The ferry was taken out of service early last week when cracks in the hull were discovered.

The return of the service comes on the day operation of the ferry will be transferred from the Jacksonville Port Authority to the city's St. Johns River Ferry Commission, which is still looking for a long-term funding source.
