2 Ponte Vedra Beach stores burglarized this week

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Employees of a hair salon in a Ponte Vedra Beach shopping center burglarized twice in recent days are taking precautions.

The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office said both incidents took place just after 5 a.m. Wednesday when a man shattered the front glass doors of the businesses. Deputies said the burglar made off with $135 and a cash box worth several hundred dollars from one store and $110 in cash from the other.

Calysta Elwood, who works at Soco for Hair, said the businesses of either side -- Gwen Berlin Boutique and a shoe store named Tootsies-- had their windows smashed by a man with a hammer. One of the businesses was able to record security footage of the burglar, but it wasn't known if it was helpful in the investigation.

The thief didn't try breaking into the salon between the two stores, but employees said incidents like these are why they stick together when closing up.

"I know that whenever we do close up at night and stuff like that, we make sure that we buddy up, team up and make sure we watch each other get to the door," Soco for Hair employee Calsta Elwood said. "Our bosses have always told us that since day one."
