Friends, family of man killed on Jax Beach hope for answers

Man was hit by SUV while walking down the sidewalk in Aug. 9

JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. – Friends of a 24-year-old Wisconsin man who was hit and killed at Jacksonville Beach are hoping that justice will soon be served nearly two weeks after the crash and with no arrest having been made.

Michael Gunderson and his friends were walking from a bar early on the morning of Sunday, Aug. 9, when he was struck and killed by an SUV.

Police said 44-year-old Deborah Brewer was at the wheel and though police took a blood sample from her that night she was not arrested at the time.

Gunderson's friends say the Wisconsin's man's family is patiently waiting for answers while his friends here are following the case closely, hoping an arrest will be made.

"Michael had never seen the ocean, he had never been really out of Wisconsin, so him and Jeremy came down and we all had a really good week," Gunderson's friend Leila Burton said.

It began as a vacation visiting friends in Jacksonville but it ended with Gunderson losing his life the last night of his visit.

"Everything that happened what was within five minutes of Michael and Jeremy leaving," Burton said.

According to police Brewer was driving a Ford Expedition when it jumped the curb of a parking lot and accelerated down a sidewalk, hitting Gunderson, who died at the scene.

Days later Gunderson's friends and family said they celebrated his life back in Wisconsin, some even getting tattoos in his memory.

"He had people coming in from Colorado, we came back from Florida, a lot of people from Wisconsin, he brought everyone together," Burton said.

According to the Jacksonville Beach Police Department a blood sample was taken from Brewer the night of the crash so investigators could get a better idea of what was in the woman's system.

The department also said they have notified the state the Brewer was involved in a traffic crash that resulted in a fatality and possible impairment was involved.

The state can review that information and suspend her license immediately, even before formal charges are filed, but that has not been done.

Meanwhile Gunderson's friends and family said they'll continue to wait and hope that justice will soon be served.

"I don't think there's any words for what you can say. I just hope that she's hurting just as much as we are. She took away a great person and there's no going back," Burton said.

The JBPD has put a rush on those toxicology results to help move the case along but they are still not back yet.

Court records also show that Brewer was arrested in 2006 in St. Johns County for DUI, and arrested in Jacksonville Beach for battery that same year. She was also cited for speeding in February.

Police ID driver of SUV that hit pedestrian

As the police continue to investigate the death of a pedestrian hit by an SUV on the sidewalk of Fourth Avenue North just after midnight Sunday morning, investigators named the driver as 44-year-old Deborah Brewer.

Jacksonville Beach police said Brewer was driving the Ford Expedition that jumped the curb of a parking lot and accelerated down the grass and sidewalk, striking 24-year-old Michael Gunderson, who died at the scene.

According to the police report, Brewer had been drinking and got into a fight with someone in a cab prior to the accident. Police are not yet saying whether drugs or alcohol were involved, but added they had a reason to take a blood sample from Brewer to determine if she was under the influence.

Brewer was questioned Sunday morning, but not arrested.

"What we have to do is to make sure we have all of our evidence in place," said Jacksonville Beach police Cmdr. Mark Evans. "Therefore, rather than doing a breathalyzer at the scene, we do a blood draw. The reason we do a blood draw is you get better detail of what's in that person's system -- whether alcohol or drugs -- and that does take some time doing toxicology."

Gunderson (pictured) was out with friends at the end of a week-long vacation and left Harmonious Monks just after midnight to get some sleep before driving back to Wisconsin on Sunday.

Police said Brewer had left a parking lot and accelerated at a high rate of speed down the grass and sidewalk, heading east on Fourth Avenue. After hitting Gunderson, the SUV hit a palm tree, a parked Honda Civic and then rear-ended a Jacksonville Transportation Authority trolley.

Gunderson's friends described the horror of seeing him hit.

"I saw his face smash the hood and he got drug under the car," Jeremy Anderson said. "After that I ran over there to the SUV. I saw this girl get out. She was terrified. She tried to resuscitate him. She was pulling his body."

One of Gunderson's friends said he was stunned by how fast the SUV driver was going.
