South Ga. crash survivor upgraded to fair condition

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Officials at a Florida hospital say the condition of a high school student who's the sole survivor of a deadly car crash in south Georgia is improving.

WALB-TV reports that officials at Shands Hospital in Gainesville, Fla., said Wednesday De'Vron Whitfield's condition has been upgraded to fair.

Whitfield was one of four Brooks County High School football players in an SUV that slammed into a tree near Quitman around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday. The other three teens - Jicarre Watkins, Johnie Parker and Shawn Waters - died in the crash.

The Georgia State Patrol has said the driver of the SUV lost control of the vehicle, veered off the road and hit a tree.

The community gathered Tuesday night for a vigil to mourn the three teens who died.
