Nearly $21.7M in disaster assistance, loans OK'd for Georgia

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Hurricane Matthew survivors in Georgia have received nearly $21.7 million in federal disaster assistance and loans from FEMA, the U.S. Small Business Administration and the National Flood Insurance Program.

With the Dec. 16 deadline approaching to register for FEMA disaster assistance, here is a snapshot of Georgia’s recovery since the Oct. 8 major disaster declaration for 10 counties. Except as noted, the figures below are as of close of business Dec. 11.

  • Registrations approved for disaster assistance: 1,874
  • Individuals and Households Program amount approved: nearly $5.7 million
  • Housing Assistance approved: nearly $4.6 million
  • Other Needs Assistance approved: more than $1.1 million
  • Percentage of housing inspections completed: 99 percent
  • SBA loans to homeowners, renters and businesses of all sizes: more than $7.8 million, including:

-- $6.71 million in loans to homeowners and renters
-- $590,800 in loans to businesses for physical disaster damage
-- $509,000 in economic injury disaster loans to businesses to replace working capital lost due to the disaster.

  • More than $8.2 million in payments for approximately 1,069 Georgia claims to the NFIP. Almost one-third was disbursed in expedited advance payments following the storm.
  • 2,495 survivor visits to the nine disaster recovery center locations established during the recovery.
  • 20,422 homes contacted by FEMA Disaster Survivor Assistance teams. The outreach resulted in:

-- 11,782 survivor interactions
-- 1,169 FEMA registrations
-- 644 referrals to other resources such as crisis counseling, veterans services, aging services, Red Cross, Catholic Charities and 211.

  • As of close of business Dec. 9, 117 state and local governments and private nonprofits submitted formal Requests for FEMA Public Assistance to the state, with 102 applicants well into the process of repair work identification.
