High property values means higher Duval schools tax

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – It might seem odd that your taxes for schools will go up even though the Duval County School Board voted to lower the rate.

Property values have increased, so the average homeowner would pay about 2 percent more on taxes to the school board.

The board tentatively approved a $1.7 billion budget. Superintendent Nikolai Vitti said the district will continue what it did last year.

"The other thing I would like to mention is we are one of the few larger urban school districts in the country that continued to find music and art teachers at the elementary level," Vitti said. "I think that makes our city and our citizenship be proud of the fact that we have to develop the whole child and not just focusing on assessments."

During a public hearing, nobody spoke up concerning the budget or the tax rate. The board will take a final vote in September.
