He moved to Jacksonville after earning his master's degree, where he worked his way from being a McDonald's restaurant manager to working in administration at Keiser University. He was active in the Jacksonville Jaycees, where he was described as a rising star. He recently co-chaired a service project collecting clothes for the homeless.

Burt was at the Pulse nightclub that night to celebrate earning his master's degree from DeVry University.

His funeral was held at Amelia County High School in Virginia, where family and friends celebrated the life of the man they called DJ. They wore blue instead of black, refusing to mourn and choosing to cherish the 29-year-old’s life.

Burt was buried at Manassa Hill Baptist Church, where his grandmother, Marian Jackson, is the associate pastor.

"He was a great kid. He was a wonderful kid. I remember his school days" Jackson told WKYT-TV. "He put his best into everything he did."

The Jaycees have set up a GoFundMe account to help support Burt's family.
