Jacksonville Sheriff's Office launches app

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office launched a new app Tuesday that allows people to submit crime tips, report an auto crash, search for inmates and view the sex offender registry.

JSO says if you want to remain anonymous while submitting a crime tip, you can text it to Crime Stoppers.

"They don't know who you are and we get the tip completely anonymous and we want that information.  We're hoping people having this accessible, we'll be able to get more tips from the community," said JSO's Melissa Bujeda.

Police said if you're in a traffic crash and there are no injuries, you can file a crash report within 10 days from the app.

One popular feature on JSO's website is the inmate search.  That feature is also available on JSO's new app.

Police will also post road closures, especially surrounding events.

"Whatever's coming to downtown Jacksonville, runs taking place where roads are going to be closed, bridges. A lot of times people who don't come downtown frequently ask is the Mathews Bridge open? Is the Hart Bridge open?" said Bujeda.

Police said they hope the biggest benefit from the app is an increased number of crime tips into the sheriff's office.

"We're hoping with the accessibility to Crime Stoppers right on your phone, the app right on your phone, we're hoping if you see something, you'll contact police," said Bujeda.

To download the free app, search "Jax Sheriff" in the Apple Store or Google Play store.
