What do you see as the top three issues in this race?
- Unfortunately, the integrity of the candidates is the most important issue in this race. One of the candidates (EDITOR'S NOTE: Weston is referring to Steven DeLaroche, who was defeated in the August primary) previously served as a Volusia County Judge and is attempting to run on his record as a judge. Unfortunately, he has repeatedly fails to inform voters that his record as a judge ended when he resigned from office rather than face charges of corruption and presenting false or misleading testimony and a false or misleading affidavit during the investigation of the corruption charges. The Judicial Qualifications Commission dismissed the charges against the judge after his resignation, as the Commission's sanction, i.e. removal from office, had been achieved. I have been endorsed by seven retired Circuit and Appellate Judges.
- Another key issue in this race is the experience of the candidates. I have 15 years experience in litigating nearly all types of civil matters, ranging from tax disputes, to business matters, to dissolutions of marriage, probate cases, dependency cases, and probate and guardianship matters. I am the only candidate who is Board Certified by the Florida Bar, a designation of expertise held by fewer than 6% of attorneys in Florida. My certification is in Business Litigation. I am the only candidate who holds an AV Preeminent rating from Martindale-Hubbell for the highest ethical standards and legal abilities, based on confidential reviews by attorneys and judges.
- Finally, the leadership abilities of the candidates and their commitment to the community is an issue in this race. I am a member of the Rotary Club of Daytona Beach. I am a Past President of the Volusia County Bar Association, having served on the Board for approximately seven years. I currently serve as a Director on the Board of the Florida Bar Foundation. Locally, I am on the City of Ormond Beach Budget Advisory Board, I am Legal Counsel to the Ormond Beach Historical Society, and I just completed a four-year term on the Board of the Ormond Beach Chamber of Commerce.
