JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – BB&T will hold a free shredding event Saturday at its Town Center branch to shred personal paper documents and reduce potential identity theft. All shredded materials will be recycled.
The Community Document Shred Day will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the BB&T branch at 4781 Town Center Parkway.

"Identity protection is an issue that requires everyone to be actively vigilant," said BB&T's Michelle Jones. "Shredding documents helps ensure the proper disposal of non-current personal records and reduces the risk they may fall into the hands of an identity thief."
According to a recent survey by Javelin Strategy & Research, nearly 12 million Americans were victims of identity theft. On average, it can take anywhere from a few months to several years to correct damage by identity theft.
Individuals may bring the equivalent of two paper grocery bags or two banker boxes of documents to shred. All documents will be shredded and recycled by Iron Mountain, a world leader in information management services.
Documents for potential shredding include those containing account numbers, passwords, PINs, signatures, Social Security numbers and dates of birth. Specifically, this could include tax records (if older than at least three years), bank and insurance statements, canceled checks, paycheck stubs, ATM and debit card receipts and credit card statements.
