SANFORD, Fla. – The six-woman jury has found George Zimmerman not guilty as the crowds outside the Seminole County Criminal Justice Center grew on Saturday.
Zimmerman faced second-degree murder charges for killing 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in February 2012. He said Martin was beating him up, and he pulled the trigger in self-defense.
Channel 4's Vic Micolucci was in Sanford all day on Saturday. He said people are anxious, people are tired and they're ready to find out how the jurors will rule.
Protesters came to the lawn to voice their opinions as tensions were running high, and sometimes things got less than friendly.
"Nobody wants you here! Go home!" said one protester. "I'm a citizen. I'm voicing my opinion!"
As the time the jurors deliberated got longer, the crowd got bigger. Many came out to ask for what they call Justice for Trayvon. To them, justice meant a murder conviction for George Zimmerman.
"He deserves to lose his freedom," said Patricia Dalton. "He needs to be in jail for the rest of his life for what he did, because it was a conscious decision he made to shoot."
Others came out in support of the neighborhood watch volunteer, believing he acted in self-defense when he killed 17-year-old Martin a year and a half ago.
"What we're running on is the law," said Patrick Woodburn. "They're running on sympathy and emotion."
There was plenty of police out on Saturday guarding the area and keeping an eye out, telling some people to calm down, but Channel 4 hasn't seen any arrests yet.
As the clock ticks, the families of Martin and Zimmerman remained quiet.
An attorney for the Martin family told Channel 4 they're anxious, but encouraged the jury will rule in their favor.
"They remain very optimistic, very prayerful about what's about to take place here," said Daryl Parks, attorney for Martin's family.
