Jacksonville college campuses check security after Texas shooting

Officials: 2 persons of interest, bystander shot at Lone Star College

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Gunfire at a Texas community college Tuesday afternoon has prompted college campuses in Jacksonville to double check their security.

Investigators said two persons of interest and a maintenance man were shot during a dispute at the Texas college Tuesday, investigators said.

Colleges remember all too well the reaction to the Virginia Tech shooting in 2007.

"After Virginia Tech, college campuses across the country were required to step it up. And college campuses procedures we have in place now are because of Virginia Tech," said Jacksonville University's Derek Hall.

Since the 2007 shooting, three major college campuses in Jacksonville took steps to increase security in the event of another tragedy.

Florida State College of Jacksonville has alert systems in place. School officials said they're working on a door locking system that will keep campus even safer.

"We have a system where we can secure any of our doors, which allows us to not lock it down because people can get out. But no one can get in. We hit a button, we can secure the campus. It doesn't work on all doors. But we're working toward that," said Captain Michael Carter with FSCJ Campus Security.

Each school Channel 4 reached out to Tuesday night said security is something they're regularly training for and that police and the SWAT team are often involved with the training.

"At UNF, we do drills all the time, we do exercise all the time. We work closely with the emergency operation center downtown," said UNF's Sharon Ashton.

All of these security measures are on the minds of students who watched the events in Texas unfold Tuesday.

"Sometimes I think about it. During the day it is easy for people to come and go without security check. So I think it poses a threat. Overall for my campus at Jacksonville University, I think it's pretty good," said student, Prince Agyemang-Gyau.
