Man arrested in hit-and-run death of Middleburg teen

FHP says tip led to driver; evidence on Jeep Grand Cherokee led to charges

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Florida Highway Patrol says a 22-year-old Jacksonville man was arrested Thursday and charged with the Nov. 26 hit-and-run death of a 13-year-old Middleburg boy.

After Brien Alvezios was struck and killed while either walking or riding his bicycle along Branan Field Road near Trail Ridge Road, the FHP asked the public to look out for a 2005-2010 Grand Cherokee. A tip led investigators to Anthony Margadonna and his 2007 Jeep. Troopers said his vehicle showed front-end damage consistent with the incident and he had still had a piece of broken headline from the vehicle in his pocket.

The FHP said the tests on the vehicle came back giving them enough evidence to charge Margadonna with leaving the scene of an accident causing a fatality and booked into the Clay County Jail on Thursday.

"I miss my son son much. I hurt so bad in my heart," said Brien's mother, Jenny Alvezios, so is still wearing a hat matching the one the boy was wearing when he was killed.

Channel 4 learned Maragodonna has over a dozen traffic citations in Duval and Clay County in the past six years, including two citations for careless operation of a motor vehicle.  He also was arrested twice on misdemeanor marijuana possession.

Since the crash, the Alvezios family has been dealing with turmoil and heartache.

A family is planning funeral for Brien at 1 p.m. on Jan. 7 at Branan Field Baptist Church.
