Transforming the Doro District Downtown

Making the area pedestrian friendly

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Plans are in the works to transform the Doro District Downtown.  It’s at  the corner of Bay Street and A Phillip Randolph.  In the developers own words they want to create an “epicenter for culinary, cultural and artistic creativity.”

You’ve seen all the building going on around Everbank Field and the Arena. You have the new amphitheater; Intuition Ale works among other things.  But did you know there are plans to build a bowling alley and entertainment venue in the area.

“There’s really a huge amount of opportunity there to kind of link all of those things together and really have a thriving entertainment district where you don't just go to one game or go to one show, said Jacob Gordon, CEO of Downtown Vision. “But you kind of do a lot of different things in that area. And it can really become the base of entertainment in Jacksonville.”

It’s planned for what’s referred to as the Doro District within the old Doro fixtures building right off A Phillip Randolph.

“It used to be that area was only for events. But with intuition and manifest distilling going in there, you know you see a lot more traffic on a daily basis. So the city is really looking at the infrastructure in place,” Gordon said. “And with Daily's place going in, you're going to need a lot more infrastructure related to getting in and out but also making it a really nice place to stay.”

All those plans mean the potential to attract more people to the area. Also in the works are blueprints to make the area more pedestrian friendly.

Gordon adds, “You know we don't have that street like a Beale Street in Memphis or a Bourbon Street in New Orleans where kind of everyone congregates. A. Philip Randolph has that opportunity being right there between the shipyards and all of those amenities. It really is exciting.”

The dream is to make this a gathering place and social hub for locals and regional tourists.
