KEYSTONE HEIGHTS, Fla. - Students returned to school at Keystone Heights High School Monday for the first time since one of their own died in a tragic accident.
Eighteen-year-old Shane Savoy died Friday after he was hit by a truck in Keystone Heights while walking toward his bus stop with another student.
Seventeen-year-old Elin Cornett was hit as well but only suffered minor injuries because she said Shane pushed her out of the way.
Savoy and Cornett were walking on Country Road 214 to their bus stop off Ranchette Road, when a truck didn't see them, hitting them both.
Cornett told the Clay County Sheriff's Office Savoy pushed her out of the way and because of that, she only suffered minor injuries.
Savoy was flown to UF Health Hospital in Gainesville, where he died. His neighbor said what Shane did doesn't surprise her one bit.
"I used to see him and her walk up and down this road, and he would always be on the outside, and she on the inside, if God forbid something like this arise, that he could get her out of the way, and that's exactly what he did," said Jackie Simpson.
At the crash scene Friday morning, many people talked to Channel 4 about the bus stop, saying it's too close to the road and it's not safe for students who have to walk down the busy County Road 214 to get to it.
The school district said it's looking into the matter.
"Each school stop, transportation goes and walks and assures that there is a safe walking place to the bus stop, so we are definitely looking at that to make sure each bus stop is as safe as possible," said Gavin Rollins, spokesperson for Clay County Schools.
The school district also said it would have grief counselors and extra resources on hand to help those students are having a tough time dealing with this tragedy.
The funeral for Savoy will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Lake Hill Baptist Church in Keystone Heights. The family will receive friends starting at 1 p.m. until service time.
