Man convicted in shooting over card game

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 30-year-old Jacksonville man was convicted Wednesday afternoon of one count of second-degree attempted murder.

In September, Joey Atwater and several others were playing cards at a Lenox Avenue home on the Westside when a verbal altercation began.

As the argument escalated, Atwater pulled out a firearm and shot 39-year-old Gerry Richardson in the chest. The victim later recovered from his injuries.

Atwater, who was on probation for possession of cocaine at the time of the offense, now faces a minimum of 25 years in prison. He is set to be sentenced the week of July 28.
