OP Medical Center clears up emergency room confusion

Hospital says emergency department still open despite no trauma status

ORANGE PARK, Fla. – Orange Park Medical Center is trying to clear up confusion after state health officials pulled the hospital's trauma center status last week.

Hospital officials released a statement Thursday saying the hospital's emergency department is still open and ready to serve patients 24 hours a day.

Last week, the state Health Department said it had completed a review of the hospital's trauma center and said it didn't meet the standards for a level two trauma center.

The hospital says its emergency room can still handle ill and injured patients.

Patients with the most severe, life-threatening injuries, like those from car accidents, shootings and drownings, need to go to a trauma center.

That would be Shands Jacksonville Medical Center or Shands at the University of Florida in Gainesville.

The hospital says it is planning to appeal the Health Department's decision.
