Police search for 2 more suspects

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – Three people, including a police officer and an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent, were shot on Florida's Turnpike on Thursday afternoon, police said.

Tom Gallagher of Pembroke Pines Fire Rescue said rescuers arrived on Florida's Turnpike between Hollywood Boulevard and Pembroke Road to find three people with gunshot wounds.

Two people, a Key Biscayne police officer and an ICE agent, were taken to Memorial Regional Hospital.

The FBI said the suspect died at the scene of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The incident began with a carjacking at about 2:20 p.m. in the area of SW 75th Street and 27th Avenue in Miami-Dade County, according to the FBI. The suspect then drove the carjacked minivan to Maxim Cuts in the 1400 block of South Palm Avenue in Pembroke Pines.

The FBI said the suspect robbed the barber shop and a shootout occurred in the parking lot. The owner of Maxim Cuts said a man pointed a gun at him. Sources said a customer at the barber shop opened fire on the robbery suspect.

The suspect took off in the carjacked vehicle, which was then dumped in Miramar. He then carjacked a G-35 Infiniti in the area of Northwest 202 Street and 57th Avenue in Northwest Miami-Dade, said sources.

The Infiniti was then involved in an crash on Florida's Turnpike.

The FBI believes the suspect tried finding another vehicle to carjack after the crash.

Key Biscayne police officials said Officer Nelia Real became involved when she was on her way home Thursday and stopped on the Turnpike to assist in what she thought was a traffic crash.

Real, 54, was shot in the neck, and another officer who stopped to her rushed her to the hospital.

"She may owe that officer her life," said Key Biscayne Police Chief Charles Press. "His quick action rushing her to the hospital, it was something he needed to do and obviously she's in good hands right now."

Officials said she was in critical but stable condition Thursday evening.

Real is a 16 year police veteran of the Key Biscayne Police Department.

The ICE agent also became involved after seeing the crash, according to the FBI.

The ICE agent was shot in the hand, WJXT's sister station WPLG-TV reported.

After the shootings, police set up a perimeter on the Turnpike from Miramar Parkway to Hollywood Boulevard. The FBI said police were not actively looking for additional suspects.

Gallagher said that when rescuers were called to the scene, they were warned of "an active shooter" on the Turnpike, so they had to take safety precautions.

Officers from multiple agencies were called to the scene.

A Broward Sheriff's Office deputy was taken to the hospital after being involved in a crash at I-95 and Sheridan Street on the way to the scene. That deputy broke her leg, according to BSO.

Florida's Turnpike is closed from Interstate 595 to the Golden Glades. Traffic was backed up for hours during rush hour as drivers were diverted near the county line.

The Florida Highway Patrol said traffic would likely be diverted until early Friday.
