CLAY COUNTY, Fla. - A 16-year-old remains in custody in connection with the killing of a Clay County deputy during a meth lab raid at a Middleburg home last week.
Jerry Daniels is charged with felony drug possession.
He was in the home on Alligator Boulevard with three men and two women when Detective David White was shot and killed and Detective Matthew Hanlin was shot in the arm by 36-year-old Ted Tilley, according to the Clay County Sheriff's Office. Tilley was shot and killed by other deputies as he ran out the back of the house, investigators said.
No others who were in the home have been charged but are still being questioned, according to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. They're identities have not been released.
Investigators said some or all of those detained were living in the house without the knowledge or permission of the owner, who said that the property went into foreclosure and he had not been there in three years.
According to a police report, Daniels was living in the home, although he's originally from Valdosta. Investigators said he had a third of a gram of methamphetamine in his possession, which led to his arrest.
Daniels is being held in a juvenile facility, despite the felony charge.
No court date for him has been set.
There's still no word on his connection with Tilley.
Hanlin was discharged from Orange Park Medical Center on Monday morning and remains at home recuperating from his injuries and related surgery. As a witness to the shootings, he is a key part of the investigation, the Sheriff's Office said.
White, a 35-year-old Army veteran, was laid to rest Monday.
Both men were shot when the two went through the front door of the home just before 6:30 p.m. Thursday to investigate the suspected meth lab.
Investigators said Tilley, the suspected gunman, had a long history of crimes ranging from traffic violations to domestic battery.
FDLE is investigating the killings and drug raid.
Donations to assist White's family are being accepted at the Clay County Sheriff's Office Humanitarian Fund at the Heritage Bank in Orange Park, account No. 1520387212.
