Tree crashes into apartment after Macclenny storm

Couple OK after tree crashes into apartment, causes damage

MACCLENNY, Fla. – A husband and wife say they were inside their apartment when a neighbor's tree crashed into it after a major storm ripped through Macclenny on Thursday.

Despite the severe pain in his neck and back, Robert Dyer said he and wife, Minerva, are feeling pretty lucky.

"Another half a second from where I was standing, I wouldn't be sitting here talking to you," said Dyer. "It was that close."

It turns out a neighbor's tree had crashed through, destroying a good part of the apartment, and multiple belongings inside.

"A big boom, big crash, big flashes. Woke up on the floor, it was raining in my face," said Dyer. "The ceiling had come down on top of me."

Dyer said he and his wife were told they couldn't go back in, and there's no telling what, if anything they own, is salvageable.

"Everything's been open to the weather, all the insulation came down," said Dyer. "There must be a foot of insulation in there. What the tree didn't wipe out, the insulation and the fallen debris got the rest of it."

The Dyers can only stay in their hotel room until Monday morning. They said they've been told the insurance company won't cover the cost of fixing the damages. For now, they don't know where they'll go.

"We have to be hopeful, we have to be very hopeful," Dyer said. "We're not going to lay down and give up. We're going to go at it just as hard as we can."
