Woman hit by train, survives in St. Augustine

St. Johns County Sheriff's Office: Woman photographing train when hit

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – A 33-year-old woman standing on railroad tracks taking photos was hit by a train Monday afternoon near West King Street and North Rodriguez Street, according to the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office.

The Florida East Coast freight train was moving slowly about 2 p.m. when Sonnie Lee Smith, of St. Augustine, was hit and dragged. She was treated by St. Johns County rescue personnel at the scene, transported to Flagler Hospital, then airlifted to UF Health in Jacksonville.

Smith told deputies that she was taking pictures of the train as it traveled southbound, but was unable to remember anything after as a result of being struck by the train.

In addition to the Sheriff's Office, FEC Railroad Police are also conducting an investigation.
