JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -

One man was shot in broad daylight at an apartment complex on the Southside, according to detectives with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

It happened about 2 p.m. Saturday at the Southwind Villas on Newton Road, near the intersection of Hogan Road and Southside Boulevard. Southwind Villas are part of the Jacksonville Housing Authority.

Officers said they weren't sure of the motive, but a young adult male was shot and taken to the hospital by a witness. He was in serious condition but his injuries were not believed to be life threatening, according to JSO Sgt. James Cannon.

Witnesses said one or possibly two suspects fled on foot.

A police helicopter and K-9 units responded but were unable to catch them. A description wasn't immediately available.

Police said it's unlikely any surveillance cameras recorded the crime.

A woman who was in the area at the time told Channel 4 she saw a group of young men, in their teens or twenties, arguing about something in front of an apartment. Then she said she heard a single gunshot and ran.

Detectives are asking anyone with information about the shooting to call them at 904-630-0500 or First Coast Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS (8477).
