Officers said they weren't sure of the motive, but a young adult male was shot and taken to the hospital by a witness. He was in serious condition but his injuries were not believed to be life threatening, according to JSO Sgt. James Cannon.

Witnesses said one or possibly two suspects fled on foot.

A police helicopter and K-9 units responded but were unable to catch them. A description wasn't immediately available.

Police said it's unlikely any surveillance cameras recorded the crime.

A woman who was in the area at the time told Channel 4 she saw a group of young men, in their teens or twenties, arguing about something in front of an apartment. Then she said she heard a single gunshot and ran.

Detectives are asking anyone with information about the shooting to call them at 904-630-0500 or First Coast Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS (8477).
