Driver shot, crashes into Brunswick duplex, dies

Victim with multiple gunshot wounds dies at scene

BRUNSWICK, Ga. – A man with gunshot wounds who crashed a car into a duplex apartment died at the scene on Tuesday night, according to the Brunswick Police Department.

At about 10:40 p.m., officers responded to a shots-fired call on Albany Street. When they arrived, officers found a Volvo station wagon that had crashed through the outer wall of the duplex.

The driver of the Volvo, 22-year-old Nicholas King, was found unresponsive and suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

"When I was walking, I heard gunshots," said neighbor Edith Cohen. "I just seen a young guy in the car, dead."

Police said no one was inside the apartment at the time.

"Honestly, I couldn't even believe it. But I mean, man, I was disappointed really," said Jamie Smith, who lives in the apartment that was damaged. "I wake up this morning and I see my apartment on the news with a big hole in it."

"We're still alive. I have a 1-year-old son; he's here all the time with me. So I'm glad he wasn't here."

Brunswick police detectives arrived and searched the neighborhood for possible witnesses. Police said they had no motive or suspects but did find 9-mm shell casings at the scene.

"I didn't want to believe it. I still don't want to believe it," said Hershell Thomas, whose son lives near where the shooting happened.

Investigators said they're not sure if the shooter or shooters walked or drove away.

Several residents said they didn't want to talk publicly about what happened, fearing retaliation. They said they hear gunshots all too often in the area.

"This is one incident. We will look at increasing patrols in the area for our citizens to make them feel safer and better, and also create that visibility that we need to," Acting Police Chief Jimmy Carter said.

Police said King moved to Brunswick from Savannah about three years ago, and now people are just thinking about his family.

"Sorry to hear about the deceased. Sorry to hear about the dude losing his life," said Randy Burke, who also lives in the apartment.

The residents said their landlord is helping them with a place to stay.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Brunswick police at 912-279-2624 or the Silent Witness Hotline at 912-267-5516.
