JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Navy conducted another weapons test in the Atlantic Ocean off the Florida coast on Sunday. Officials would not say exactly where a 10,000-pound charge detonated near the littoral combat ship USS Milwaukee.

"The purpose of FSST (full ship shock trials) is to validate the operational survivability of new-construction ships after exposure to underwater shock," Navy Capt. Thurraya Kent said in a statement. "Three tests are scheduled for the ship over a period of several weeks and each test will be conducted with a 10,000-pound explosive charge.  Exact dates for each shot are dependent on sea state, weather, marine mammal activity and several other factors."

In July, an apparent 3.7 magnitude earthquake about 168 nautical miles northeast of Daytona Beach Shores was likely triggered by a similar Navy explosive test.

The Daytona Beach News-Journal reported a similar 3.7 magnitude earthquake on June 10 off Ormond-by-the-Sea happened about the same time the Navy reported conducting a shock trial on the USS Jackson.
