TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – State Rep. Ronald "Doc" Renuart, R-Ponte Vedra Beach, said Wednesday he "definitely" plans to run for a Senate seat if it opens up because of Sen. John Thrasher becoming president of Florida State University.

Thrasher, R-St. Augustine, is seeking re-election Nov. 4 in Senate District 6. But later that week he is expected to be confirmed by the state university system's Board of Governors as the next Florida State University president. If he wins re-election and then leaves for the university job, it would spur a special election.

Renuart opened a campaign account this week that could be used for the special election. Also, he said he was in Tallahassee on Wednesday lining up support.

"I feel this is the best way that I'll be able to represent my region for the issues that are important to us in the First Coast and Northeast Florida area,'' Renuart said.

The district includes St. Johns, Flagler and Putnam counties and part of Volusia County. Among the other potential candidates in a special election is Rep. Travis Hutson, R-Elkton.
