Thrasher resigns as Scott's re-election chairman

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Sen. John Thrasher resigned as chairman of Gov. Rick Scott's re-election campaign Wednesday, a day after being offered the job of president of Florida State University.

"As a result of the events yesterday, I had a conversation with the governor, where he and I agreed that it is best for me to immediately step down as chairman of his re-election campaign," Thrasher said in a prepared statement.

Thrasher announced Tuesday -- after the FSU Board of Trustees voted 11-2 to offer to name him the school's next president -- that he wouldn't immediately leave his Senate seat or end his own re-election campaign, as the state university system's Board of Governors must still approve his appointment to the FSU job.

A contract for Thrasher has yet to be drafted, and the statewide board next meets in November, after the election.

Separate from the vote Tuesday, trustee Stefano Cavallaro, the FSU student-body president, requested that Thrasher step down from the Scott campaign by 5 p.m. Wednesday as a sign of "good faith" to those on the campus who expressed concerns about his presidency.
