Fisher updates FSU QB competition

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Who will be the starting quarterback for Florida State when they open fall camp a couple months from now?  Sean Maguire is officially No. 1 on the depth chart, although he missed all of spring ball with an ankle injury.

Redshirt freshman Deondre Francious took advantage of the opportunity and impressed with both his arm and legs during the spring game. The decision will come down to Maguire’s knowledge of the offensive system or the playmaking ability of Francious once plays break down. Fisher was in Jacksonville earlier this week and says right now Maguire is in the lead.

“He’s No. 1 in respect to what he’s done, “said Fisher. “But Deondre [Francious] has earned some time with the starters and we’ll rotate those guys and it’s going to be a wide open deal. It’s no disrespect to Sean that’s how we are at every position. I’m truthful, the best player is going to play at every position.”

Whoever gets the job won’t be able to ease into the starting position. The Seminoles open the 2016 season against an Ole Miss team that will likely be ranked in the top 15 in the country.

"We'll wait and see how it comes out," said Fisher during Wednesday's ACC football coaches teleconference.
