There's a lot of sales online, but knowing where to look can be tricky. The May 2012 issue of ShopSmart magazine, from the publisher of Consumer Reports, is the annual bargain Issue. They've found everything shoppers need to know about where to find the best deals. It features a list of great discount websites, plus the best sale and clearance sections from major retailers and other sellers.

ShopSmart scanned dozens of retailers and found steep price cuts on all kinds of stuff. Here's a sample of what they uncovered and some of the sites where you can save 60 percent or more:

Our first example, the outlet center at Bestbuy.com.  You can find discontinued and refurbished items like a 52'' LG HDTV that was $1,600 marked down to $978.

Want to get a great deal on wine? Try cellarthief.com.  The site has flash sales that start at midnight and run 24 hours. You can get wine normally $20 a bottle as low as $9 or $10 each.

If you love shoe shopping, you will go crazy for onlineshoes.com/outlet. Not only does it have a great return policy, it has fantastic styles for major discounts -- some as much as 80 percent off.

And have you ever checked Walmarts clearance section at Walmart.com?   Obviously it changes but when we checked, they had more then 2,000 items including cameras that were at least $60 off.

Here are some more sites to try:

CookwareNMore.com
Best for: Imperfect All-Clad cookware

CrateAndBarrel.com/Outlet
Best for: Discontinued, past season, and outlet-specific furniture, home décor, and tabletop

LandsEnd.com's overstocks
Best for: Overstock, discontinued, and imperfect apparel, accessories, and home items.
