JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Have you been getting more robocalls lately? You’re not alone.
According to the Federal Trade Commission, of the 91,915 complaints filed in the last five years from the 904 area code, about 60 percent were for robocalls.
More than 1 million people in the 904 area code have registered for the Do Not Call list to stop those pesky calls.
But the Better Business Bureau says marketing companies and sometimes scammers are becoming more clever at trying to get consumers on the phone.
To add a number to the Do Not Call list, go to https://www.donotcall.gov/register/reg.aspx and enter the phone number. The FTC will send an email confirming the number has been added to the list.
Some cellphone companies, including T-Mobile, have also begun identifying numbers as possible scams. And there are free scam call blocks you can find in the app store on your phone.
If you answer a call that turns out to be a robocall, Tom Stephens, with the BBB, says to disconnect immediately and check your credit card bills and phone bill for any discrepancies.
Stephens said it's important not to say yes to anything on a robocall because they might be recording your voice and could use it to OK charges you didn't actually agree to.
Many consumers are so fed up with robocalls they've stopped answering numbers they don't recognize.
“I’m just not going to answer it,” Zac Taylor said. “To be honest with you, I'm going to see it's not someone I know -- not in my contact list, and I am not going to answer it.”
