Glynn County schools to close all week

Coastal school districts and many colleges remain closed Monday

All but two coastal counties in northeast Florida and southeast Georgia will reopen schools Tuesday as recovery from Hurricane Matthew continues. Flagler County plans to reopen schools on Wednesday, but Glynn County, Georgia, schools will remain closed all week.

Emergency management officials in Glynn County said St. Simons Island has not reopened to the public and officials don't know when it will. There are also schools among the 8,710 Georgia Power customers still without power Monday afternoon.

St. Johns County, Nassau County and Clay County confirmed that their schools will reopen Tuesday, although Orange Park High School will not reopen until Wednesday. The school is still without power due to a transformer fire on Saturday.

Because of road conditions, there could be some delays with bus pickups and drop-offs in remote parts of the area.

Following school closings during Hurricanes Hermine and Matthew, Flagler County schools need to make up five days. The first of these “hurricane make-up days” will be this Friday, which was originally scheduled to be a teacher work day. Additional makeup days will be announced at a later date.

Duval County is still deciding on its hurricane make-up days but said the first grading period would be extended to Oct. 19 because of the hurricane. Report card dates will not change, officials said.

Jacksonville University and all three campuses of St. Johns River State College were closed Monday. The University of North Florida originally planned to be open Monday, but decided Sunday afternoon that since some parts of the First Coast are still without power and Duval and St. Johns county schools will be closed, UNF would cancel classes Monday. Heritage Institute also closed Monday.

The FAMU Jacksonville satellite campus does not have power and will remain closed until further notice, as crews work to restore electricity.

All campuses of Florida State College at Jacksonville and Edward Waters College reopened Monday.
