‘Scarpetta’ brings Patricia Cornwell’s iconic crime thriller to Prime Video

Fans of Patricia Cornwell’s bestselling novels are finally getting their long-awaited screen adaptation.

Scarpetta, a new forensic crime thriller based on Cornwell’s Kay Scarpetta series, is now streaming on Prime Video.

The series stars Nicole Kidman as Dr. Kay Scarpetta, a brilliant forensic pathologist determined to serve as the voice of victims and solve complex cases. Academy Award winners Jamie Lee Curtis and Ariana DeBose also star, along with Emmy winner Bobby Cannavale and Emmy nominee Simon Baker.

The show unfolds across two timelines. In the present, Scarpetta returns to her hometown to resume her work while investigating a grisly murder. In the past, younger versions of key characters navigate their early careers and relationships — roles played by Rosy McEwen and Jake Cannavale.

In an interview, McEwen said joining the project was “humbling” and “lit a fire” under her. “To be part of something so legendary… it was just really exciting,” she said.

Cannavale echoed her sentiment, calling the experience a “real privilege” and describing the release of the trailer as surreal. “It makes you go, ‘Oh dang — big leagues, here we go,’” he said.

Both actors said stepping into characters beloved by fans was daunting but rewarding. “I knew I’d never be exactly the Kay everyone imagined, but I took the responsibility very seriously,” McEwen said.

The dual timelines also presented unique challenges. McEwen said it was helpful to know where her character ends up, but it also meant she had to balance portraying the past authentically. Cannavale noted that the series combines cerebral forensic work with engaging drama. “It’s cerebral, but also spill-your-popcorn exciting,” he said.

The series promises a fresh take on the crime thriller genre, blending mystery, family drama, and detailed forensic investigation. Fans can expect a suspenseful, emotionally rich story as Scarpetta confronts long-held secrets and professional challenges.

“Every element of this show gets the same amount of attention and dedication,” Cannavale said. “It’s just sort of awesome.”

Scarpetta premieres March 11 on Prime Video.
