The Sherman family name is in no danger of dying. For more than 100 years, all the children born into it have been boys.
But that streak is ending, and the family couldn’t be happier.
On Sunday, surrounded by family from all generations, Montgomery County firefighter Michael Sherman and his wife, Joacquia Sherman, found out they’re expecting a baby girl.
“I just feel honored that, finally, we are the ones bringing the baby girl into the world. Finally, after over a hundred years. It’s amazing,” Michael Sherman said.
Their daughter will be the first girl born into the Sherman family in 108 years.
“It’s like a monumental thing,” Grandfather Michael Serman Sr. said. “I have three boys. My dad had two boys. His brother had two boys. So, it’s not been nothing but boys, boys, boys.”
The gender reveal was a historic moment in the Sherman family line, and the family plans to make sure their new little treasure knows how special she is.
“She’s going to know that she made history in this Sherman family,” Grandmother Chantene Newman said.
The last girl to carry the Sherman name was Orah Belle Sherman, Michael’s great, great aunt, who was born in 1917.
“She was a trailblazer in Atlanta,” Great-Grandmother Lydia Robertson said. “She met a lot of civil rights leaders, and she made an impact in Atlanta.”
The family is excited to see what the newest Sherman will do with her life when she comes into this world.
“No matter what path she chooses, we will be with her. I will always be with her,” Robertson said. “She’s going to always have support here for us, and I pray she makes the right decisions in life and take the right path.”
The baby girl is due in March.
