Companies changing microchip credit card policies

Changes meant to decrease customer transaction times

No description found

The added security of a credit card with a microchip is nice, but customers say the feature makes them spend too much time in the checkout line. Now companies are making changes to shorten transaction times.

Visa says it has upgraded its software so that chip-enabled cards won't take quite so long to process.

The company says the chip-card will only need about two seconds to register.

Before the upgrade, customers had to leave them in the terminal while the transaction went through. Visa says the change will cut about 18 seconds off transaction times.

Walmart has also instituted a policy change to trim some time for customers. The retailer will no longer ask customers to confirm the amount of the transaction. The company says this measure will save about eleven seconds.

Businesses say the tweaks are necessary because customers are used to the speed of swiping their cards.
