Suspected Serial Killer Found Hanging In Cell

Police Say He Committed Suicide Two Days Before Hearing

YULEE, Fla. – Police say a man suspected of killing at least three people in two states committed suicide in his Nassau County jail cell Monday.

The Nassau County Sheriff's Office reports finding Ross Lane Emerson (pictured, right), 41, hanging from a piece of cloth. A note to his mother described as "apologetic" was found nearby.

Emerson was awaiting trial for the murder of 33-year-old Katrina Benson, whose body was found in a wooded area near Yulee in January. But he is also a suspect in the murders of Robert Jones on Jacksonville's Westside Jan. 1, and man in Savannah, Ga.

He was also questioned about the disappearance Jackie Markham, a 52-year-old grandmother from Callahan.

Since the arrest of the Ft. Worth, Texas, man in January, Nassau Sheriff Ray Geiger reports receiving calls about Emerson from law enforcement agencies around the country.

"Ten or 15 calls from around the country, and some here locally in Florida have called us also for some unsolved homicides they've had," Geiger told Channel 4 in February.

Emerson was scheduled for a pre-trial hearing in the Benson murder Thursday.
