Two Arrested In Second Coffee County Murder

Man's Body Found Dumped In Well Last Friday

DOUGLAS, Ga. – Two Coffee County men were arrested for killing an acquaintance and stuffing his body down a well.

The body of 32-year-old Michael Eugene Johnson was found 25 feet down in a well on an abandoned farm Friday. An autopsy later revealed that he had a crushed chest and larynx.

Dwayne Keith Benway, 40, and 52 year old Wendell Harper Douglas, 52, were arrested Saturday by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and local authorities. They are being held without bond.

Investigators have not revealed a motive, but they say all three men knew each other.

This was the second murder in Coffee County in one week. Vernita Greene Tomlin, 41, was found stabbed to death in her Douglas home on April 12. The Sheriff's Office and GBI are investigating that murder.
