Michigan Murder Suspect Arrested In Jacksonville

21-Year-Old Accused Of Killing Michigan College Trustee

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 21-year-old man wanted for the murder of a college trustee in a Detroit suburb was arrested in Jacksonville Wednesday still driving the victim's car.

Investigators believe Jamaal Lamar Coney (pictured, left) stabbed to death 64-year-old Richard DeVries in his Livonia, Mich., condominium. Police believe the murder occurred on June 4, but the body was not discovered until early last week.

Michigan police said Coney stole DeVries' car and fled the state. An off-duty Jacksonville officer became suspicious when he saw Coney driving that Chevrolet Impala with Michigan plates in Springfield, learned the car was stolen, called for backup, then took Coney into custody without incident.

Police believe the killing was not a random act of violence. Coney was apparently an acquaintance of DeVries (pictured, right), who was a trustee of Schoolcraft College.

Coney is charged with premeditated murder, felony murder and armed robbery.
