JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Family and friends of a high school football player seriously injured during a game held out hope as he underwent a long surgery Thursday.
J.T. Townsend, who was hurt when he tackled another player during a football game last Friday, was in surgery for nine hours to stabilize his neck.

There was no word if the surgery helped Townsend recover movement in his arms or legs.
Townsend is the senior team captain at Episcopal High School, where he also plays on the basketball team. He was critically injured during a game against Bishop-Kenny.
Townsend lost consciousness on the field and remains in critical condition at Shands Jackosnville Medical Center. He cannot move his arms or legs and is on a repsirator.
The school has set up a fund to help Townsend's family pay his medical bills. Checks can be sent to the school's advancement office at 4455 Atlantic Blvd., Jacksonville 32207.
