Locking Gas Caps Making Comeback

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Derrick James loves his 1992 Cadillac -- but not when it costs him $50 to fill up.

"It's killing my pocket to go back and forth to work every day," he said.

With gas prices on the rise, so are the number of gas thefts. In some instances, gas is being stolen right from the tank.

"I wouldn't want someone to steal my gas," James said. "It's too expensive."

Now, a device invented in the 1970s to keep gas in the tank is making a comeback. It's called a locking gas cap, designed to make gas impossible to steal.

"We've been selling them for years and years now," said Keean Downing, manager of Arlington Auto Parts on University Boulevard.

He said a lot of people don't know about the locking gas cap.

"We haven't noticed an increase in gas caps," Downing said. "We have, though, in people complaining about getting their gas stolen."

Downing said a cap costs about $20.
