Man Killed In Southside Apartment; Roommate Charged

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 32-year-old man was killed in a Southside apartment, and police have charged his roommate with murder.

Patrol officers were called to reports of a fistfight at the the Melrose Place Apartments in the 3600 block of Kernan Boulevard about 5 p.m. Tuesday. When they got there, they found Jose Sotomayor-Rivera dead in the living room.

Homicide investigators said the Sotomayor-Rivera's roommate, Jeremy Douglas Smith, 25, had blood on his body and clothes. As he was questioned, Smith admitted he killed his roommate.

According to the police report, Sotomayor-Rivera had been stabbed several times and appeared to have been hit on the head.

Police have not talked about the motive for the killing.
