Police: Man Shot Inside Westside TV Repair Shop

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A man was rushed to a hospital after the owner of a Westside television repair shot him Wednesday afternoon, police said.

Police said the man, later identified as Vincent Hudson, was shot several times about 12:30 p.m. inside Marvin's Electronics in the 900 block of Edgewood Avenue South.

Investigators told Channel 4 that Doug Freeman was acting suspiciously and was following his 7-year-old daughter around the store. Freeman's wife took the girl away and he directed employees to go to the back of the store, he got a gun and confronted the suspect.

"I knew something bad was about to happen," Freeman said. "I was in fear of my life and fear of everyone else's life."

A witness told Channel 4's Emily Pantelides she heard four or five shots.

Hudson was taken to Shands-Jacksonville Medical Center. He was reported to be in fair condition Thursday morning.

The initial call came in to police as a robbery and shooting, but detectives have not confirmed that any robbery took place.

"There's no reason to rob a broken television shop. I mean -- everything's broken," Freeman's wife, Charlotte, said.

Police are investigating and said it is too early to say if any charges would be filed in the shooting.

"If somebody's going to harm you, I think you should take matters into your own hands and take care of it," said Robin Culberhouse, who owns the neighboring storefront and hear the gunfire. "I mean, you can't wait for police to come, if somebody's got a gun on you or threatening you or threatening your life."

Freeman told Channel 4's Emily Pantelides that he shot a man 10 years ago when he felt threatened in his shop. That man died.
