Teen Beaten For Rare Sneakers To Be Featured On 'Oprah'

NBA Player Comes Up With Idea To Prevent Sneaker Thefts

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The story of a Jacksonville teen who was beaten bloody for the shoes on his feet has caught the attention of the "Oprah Winfrey Show."

About a year ago, Fenton Reese spoke with Channel 4 after he was jumped by several teens who were after his pricey, rare pair of basketball shoes.

Last year, the Englewood High School student suffered a broken nose and broken blood vessels in his eye in an attack at a neighborhood basketball court. His Jordan Mach III shoes were stolen.

Fenton has fully recovered, but said what happened that day would always be with him.

His mother, Miquelle Christian, said she wouldn't forget either.

"April 30 -- I remember the day," Christian said.

It's topic now being talked about on national TV. Reese and his mom were featured recently on HBO's "Real Sports Show," and on Friday their story will appear on "Oprah."

"We have an opportunity to share our story and offer solutions," Christian said.

NBA star Stephon Marbury said he thinks he has a solution -- offer a good athletic shoe for only $15, so kids won't be tempted to steal them.

Reese and his mom said they hope Marbury's idea works.

"Let's be smart about this and not hurt each other over it," Christian said.

"I think he's got a really good idea and like what he's trying to do here," Reese said.

Reese said he likes Marbury's idea so much that he wrote a song about it that he hopes the player will hear one day.

Two teens, 14 and 15 years old, were arrested in connection with Reese's attack and robbery.
