Kingsland Bank Robbery Suspect Faces More Charges

KINGSLAND, Ga. – The suspect arrested minutes after the robbery of the Ameris Bank on U.S. Highway 40 in Kingsland last week is also accused of robbing banks in Athens and Augusta.

A Kingsland police officer and a Camden County sheriff's deputy stopped Tony A. Bell, 46, of St. Augustine, Fla., as he tried to get on Interstate 95 after the Kingsland bank was robbed. He was arrested and money believed taken in the robbery was recovered.

FBI agents comparing evidence from the Ameris Bank with hold-ups of banks in Augusta and Athens five days earlier were convinced that Bell was responsible for those.

Authorities said that Bell made full confessions to both additional robberies when interviewed in the Camden County Jail.

"Had it not been for the timely and professional response by the Kingsland Police Department, Mr. Bell would likely have gotten away with another in a string of bank robberies," said Anthony Alig, special agent with the FBI Brunswick field office.

Additional federal charges against Bell are pending.
