Jaguars Sign David Garrard To Extension

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Quarterback David Garrard has signed a six-year contract extension with the Jacksonville Jaguars that will keep him in teal and black through 2015.

Terms of Monday's deal were not released, but Garrard and his agent, Albert Irby, had been looking for something similar to the six-year, $67.5 million contract Dallas quarterback Tony Romo signed last season.

"This is far and away the largest contract in Jaguars history," Jaguars owner Wayne Weaver said Monday afternoon. "And I can also say David has earned this."

Channel 4's Sam Kouvaris reported that the contract will pay Garrard $60 million, with $20 million guaranteed.

"The Jaguars have now parceled out an awful lot of money in just five days. Jack Del Rio last week got a $20 million extension, and David Garrard with a six-year extension that will keep him here for seven more years -- $20 million in guaranteed money and $60 million total if he plays out the entire contract," Kouvaris said.

"To come from where I was last year to where I am now truly is a blessing," Garrard said. "Our goal now is to win a championship. That's all I want to do -- bring Jacksonville a championship."

After being named Jaguars starting quarterback less than a week before the season opener, the 30-year-old Garrard completed 64 percent of his passes for 2,509 yards and 18 touchdowns despite missing three games because of an ankle injury. He threw just three interceptions and finished with the NFL's third-highest passer rating (102.2).

Perhaps most importantly, he led the Jaguars to the second round of the playoffs -- the first time the team had made it that deep since 1999.

A longtime backup who beat out Byron Leftwich for the starting job, Garrard is entering the final year of a four-year deal that paid about $2 million annually.

  • Garrard is one of only six active starting quarterbacks who have been with the same team for more than five seasons, joining Peyton Manning (Indianapolis, 1998 draft), Tom Brady (New England, 2000 draft), Donovan McNabb (Philadelphia, 1999 draft), Marc Bulger (St. Louis, 2001 free agent) and Matt Hasselbeck (Seattle, 2001 trade). In addition, Garrard joins Manning, Brady and McNabb as the only quarterbacks that remain with the team that drafted them.
  • Garrard produced 15 100-plus rating games, 13 as a starter, and 11 games with multiple touchdowns.
  • He is a perfect 6-0 in starts against NFC opponents.
  • He recorded 74 completions of 20-plus yards with 11 touchdowns.
  • He has thrown two or more interceptions in only two of 40 games.
  • He is one of only 10 players who have started at quarterback for Jaguars.
  • Garrard a franchise single-game postseason record at New England on Jan. 12, 2008 in AFC Divisional playoff game with 278 passing yards, 22 completions and a 66.7 completion percentage. He finished 22 of 33 for 278 yards with 2 TDs/1 INT for a 100.3 passer rating.
  • He was named to USA Today All-Joe Team in 2007, which goes to players and coaches who have overachieved and often been overlooked.
  • He was named second alternate for the Pro Bowl in 2007 despite playing in only 12 games.
  • He recorded a 60.0 percent completion percentage in nine of the last 11 regular season games in 2007.
