KINGSLAND, Ga. – A 47-year-old man facing federal charges of robbing banks in Kingsland and Thomson, Ga., told a judge he needed the money to pay his bills.

Bell was arrested by Camden County deputies as he tried to turn onto Interstate 95 minutes after robbing $26,420 from the Ameris Bank in Kingsland on Jan. 8. He was later charged in federal court with both that robbery and the holdup of a Regions Bank branch in Oconee County on Dec. 3, 2007.

"I went in and robbed those banks. I was under a lot of financial pressure at the time, and obviously, I wasn't thinking clearly," Bell was quoted as telling senior U.S. District Judge Anthony Alaimo.

Bell faces up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000 on each of two counts of bank robbery.
