JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 44-year-old man is accused of shooting and killing a high school senior on Saturday, just hours before the 18-year-old was to attend his prom at Englewood High School.
Police said Jerome Dawson was dead in the stairwell of the Southwood apartment complex in the 4000 block of Barnes Road when officers arrived just before 3 p.m.

Within minutes, police stopped a man matching a witness description of the gunman walking swiftly in the 5300 block of Bedford Road.
As an officer approached Steve Anderson, he said, "I did it; I'm the one you are looking for," according to the arrest report.
Police said they found a 9 mm handgun in Anderson's rear pocket, an ammunition clip and extra ammunition in his other pockets.
Investigators were told that Dawson and a friend went to the apartment to pick up tickets to the prom when Anderson confronted them with a gun. Witnesses said Dawson ran into the stairwell to try to get away, but was shot.
Police said they had responded to that apartment Friday night because of a dispute between the two.
Anderson was being held without bond on a charge of murder.
