Trial Date Set For Girl Accused Of Murder

PUTNAM COUNTY, Fla. – A 16-year-old girl accused of brutally killing a man in Melrose learned on Thursday the date of her trial.

A Putnam County judge set June 8 as the trial date for Morgan Leppert. The teen is accused of first-degree murder.

According to investigators, Leppert and her boyfriend, 23-year-old Toby Lowry, killed James Stewart last April before stealing the victim's truck and leaving the state.

Leppert was the focus of a nationwide Amber Alert after she disappeared with Lowry. A tip generated from that alert led to the pair's capture as they were hitchhiking through Texas.

In January, a judge sentenced Toby Lowry to life in prison. He was spared the death penalty because he pleaded guilty and agreed to testify against Leppert.

Because of her age, Leppert would not face the death penalty if convicted.
