Police found Dewan in his SUV at a gas station in San Jose. Investigators said he drove there from a nearby Wachovia bank, where he was shot at a drive-through ATM.

According to a police report, Dewan pulled up to the ATM on St. Augustine Road at about 8 p.m. He had a credit card in hand, and as he stopped his SUV, a "suspect ran up to his vehicle, pointed a gun at his chest and discharged a round," according to the report.

The robber again pointed the gun at Dewan and said, "Give it up," according to the report.

After Dewan was shot, he pushed the robber's gun out of the way, threw his wallet and fled to the gas station for help.

The crime brings back some frightening memories for 80-year-old Jack Funkhouser, who said he was robbed in October at the walk-up ATM at the same bank.

"I got $100, put my card back in. Boom. That's when it happened," Funkhouser said.

Funkhouser said a man with his face partially covered put a gun against Funkhouser's neck. He said the robber got away.

Funkhouser said he hopes police will take the latest crime at the bank seriously.

"(Dewan)'s with a big company, and he is somebody. I thought maybe now they will do something," Funkhouser said.

Wachovia released this statement on the robbery and shooting: "Wachovia is working closely with the Jacksonville police department in apprehending the suspect involved in the incident on Dec. 23 at our drive-up ATM. Wachovia ATMs are equipped with surveillance cameras that can help law enforcement officials identify thieves. We recommend that when using an ATM to be aware of your surroundings, and if using an ATM after dark, to be especially vigilant, including having someone accompany you."
