JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Anne Smith said she will never be the same after she developed bedsores while at Memorial Hospital.
"Having a bedsore on your body is like a window into hell," Smith said.

Smith, along with five other families, is suing Memorial Hospital because of bedsores, which are caused when a patient is left in one position and blood is cut off to one area, creating a massive sore.
"In some cases, patients died as a result of these bedsores," attorney Tom Edwards.

Michael Johnson was a patient who died from bedsores. Johnson, who used to be a popular radio DJ in Jacksonville, was in the hospital for diabetes. When his wife saw the bedsores he developed, she fainted.
"I just passed out. I fell to the floor," said Johnson's wife, Ruth Ann Johnson. "I just hollered, 'What had happen to my husband. What happened to my husband. What happened to him.' And they could not give me an explanation."
The same situation happened to Patricia Marshal, whose mother was also at Memorial Hospital and died from bedsores.
"When I walked in, I was shocked," Marshal said. "I could not believe there are sores that deep. You could take your fist and put it in. They were all the way to the bone."
Now a group of attorneys is looking for answers, and they filed suit against Memorial Hospital because it had the most cases of patients with bedsores.
"We have now seen them in multiple hospitals in this community, and they are unforgivable and they are completely preventable with basic human care -- food, water and turning," Edwards said.
Memorial Hospital said said it cannot comment right now, but said it believes it offers great patient care.
Meanwhile, the families looking for answers said they want people to know one thing.
"It could have been prevented. It could have been prevented," said Ann Thompson, whose mother developed bedsores. "That is the whole issue with me and why I am so angry about it."
