Jekyll Island Replaces Asphalt With Tabby Concrete

Oyster Shell Concrete Overlay to Replace Asphalt on Final Stretch of Riverview Drive

JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. – The Jekyll Island Authority is in the final phase of replacing the asphalt on roadways and bike paths in the historic district with ?tabby? concrete containing white oyster shells.

About 80 percent of the pavement within the historic district, aside from Riverview Drive, has been replaced.

?The Historic District project will ultimately create a more aesthetically pleasing and safe surface for guests traveling in vehicles, cyclists, walkers and runners to enjoy,? said Jones Hooks, executive director for the Jekyll Island Authority. ?The improvements made so far have been well received by Jekyll Island residents and guests who are anxiously looking forward to the completion.?

To complete the work, Riverview Drive will become a one lane entry from the entrance of the Jekyll Island Club Hotel to the historic Jekyll Island Wharf this week. Later this month, Riverview Drive will be closed to through traffic while paving is completed.

Traffic going to the Jekyll Island Historic Wharf, the Jekyll Island Club Hotel, Latitude 31 Seafood Restaurant and the Rah Bar will be detoured to Stable Road and into the historic district via Old Plantation Road.

The work is scheduled to be complete by the end of February. When the roadway enhancement project is complete, it will also offer an additional riverfront bike path that will direct cyclists out of the historic district.

In addition to the road projects in the historic district, the highly anticipated reopening of the Flash Food gas and convenience store and Dairy Queen Grill and Chill will occur later this month.
